The Journey Behind Akoma from the Heart

When I founded Akoma from the Heart Mental Health Consulting Services, I brought with me not just my clinical training, but the wisdom gained through a lifetime of both professional experience and personal growth as a Black woman navigating my own healing journey.

My path to becoming a therapist wasn't linear. I began my career in Criminal Justice, serving as a Detective in the Sex Crimes and Victim Services Unit for the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. There, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of trauma and the resilience of survivors. This experience ignited my passion for trauma-informed care and shaped my understanding of how deeply our wounds can affect every aspect of our lives.

My commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals led me to become the Program Manager of the Sex Abuse Services Unit for Prince George's County Department of Social Services. Later, I spent over a decade with the District of Columbia Child and Family Services Agency, where I trained hundreds of social work students and facilitated family group conferences that addressed complex family dynamics and generational patterns.

Today, I continue sharing my knowledge as an adjunct professor at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), nurturing the next generation of helping professionals while maintaining my private practice.

As both a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-C) and Certified Scrum Master (CMS), I bring a unique blend of therapeutic expertise and project management skills to my work. This combination allows me to help clients not just process their pain but strategically build new foundations for their lives.
Throughout my career, I've become particularly passionate about breaking cycles of generational trauma within the BIPOC community. I've developed programs that focus on value-based healing and resilience, addressing not only emotional wounds but also practical aspects of legacy-building like financial literacy and overcoming scarcity mindsets.

When I speak at conferences and community events, I often address the mental health challenges facing the African American community, caregivers and the growing crisis of loneliness and isolation in our society. These issues deeply affect our ability to heal and thrive.
What truly distinguishes my approach is my commitment to weaving together evidence-based clinical methods with cultural wisdom and lived experience. As someone who has navigated both personal and collective trauma, I create a therapeutic space where BIPOC individuals can feel truly seen, heard, and understood in the fullness of their identity.

I chose the name "Akoma" for my practice because it comes from the Adinkra symbol representing Patience, Endurance. Tolerance, Consistency and Faithfulness– qualities I've found essential in my own healing journey and in the work I do with clients. At Akoma from the Heart, I honor both the clients' need for deeper healing and the endurance that has carried us – and our ancestors – through challenges.

My mission remains clear: to help you claim your birthright, build a meaningful legacy, and create a thriving future for yourself and the generations that will follow you. This isn't just my profession – it's my calling and my own contribution to healing our collective wounds.

Rebuilding Your Emotional Foundation

I call myself a Healing Architect because I believe true healing isn't about quick fixes or simply managing symptoms. It's about thoughtfully redesigning the foundational structures of your emotional life.

Just as an architect doesn't just patch holes in a damaged building but reimagines and rebuilds for strength and beauty, I help you:

This approach recognizes that you aren't "broken"—you're in the process of rebuilding. And that process deserves the same attention to detail, creativity, and expertise that any important construction would receive.

Culturally Rooted, Trauma-Informed Healing

My practice weaves traditional clinical approaches with culturally affirming care that speaks directly to the lived experiences of BIPOC individuals. I don't just treat symptoms—I honor stories, identity, ancestry, and legacy.

By addressing both personal and collective trauma within its cultural context, we create healing that is more complete and authentic to your experience.

Specialized Support Across Life Transitions

From young adulthood to midlife and menopause, I hold space for the emotional shifts, role changes, and identity redefinitions that often go unsupported in our society.

These transitions aren't just challenges to overcome—they're powerful thresholds that, when navigated consciously, can lead to profound growth and renewal.
